Our complex consists of two towers, each with an external “observation” lift. The lift shafts were open, with the lift cars exposed to wind and rain at times – something that caused us grief on a number of occasions.
We elected to have the lift shafts enclosed in a screen of glass panels with a steel supporting structure. Retrofitting this structure to an existing building that wasn’t constructed with this work in mind, was a very complex undertaking requiring great precision. All this work had to be done in coordination with the lifts being taken out of service, for safety reasons.
We elected to execute the project on a Design and Construction basis, and we engaged a Structural Engineer to oversight the tender process and the eventual construction work. In the end, due to the complexity involved, we could only get quotes from two contractors – they consisted of one of the large glass companies, and Michael Cossa from Specific Systems.
The two quotes were amazingly close in price, considering the overall cost of the project. The solution offered by Specific Systems was judged to be superior from a visual perspective and was deemed to be structurally sound by our consulting engineer.
We went with Specific Systems, and we were never disappointed with our choice. Michael Cossa and his assistant executed the work to perfection and in well under the estimated time – which minimised our lift outages and inconvenience. They were a delight to interact with on site and fitted in very well.
We cannot recommend Michael Cossa and Specific Systems highly enough.
